The Akhal-Teke Horse Breed

They are the last of the true pure-blood breeds in the world with their history tracking back to 4,000 years before Christ. Only a few thousand roam the earth today. The Akhal-Teke is a horse breed from Turkmenistan. Only about 3,500 are left worldwide. Known for their speed and famous for the natural metallic shimmer of their coats.

Ancient and mythical the Akhal-Teke is the horse of legends. Their noble spirit,  unparalleled endurance and metallic sheen set them apart from other horses. Bred in the mountains and deserts of central Asia for more than 2,500 years they are both fleet of foot and stout of heart.

The graceful, intelligent, sensitive, fearless, and athletic golden horses of Central Asia were known and revered by the peoples of Asia for more than 5,000 years. Archeological excavations in Turkmenistan and in high elevation frozen graves in the Pazyryk kurgans uncovered remains of refined horses of Akhal-Teke type, buried with their noble masters at the time of the Scythians. Recent DNA studies at the University of Kentucky confirm Akhal-Teke as the earliest domesticated breed of horses.
